Bespoke tailor Henry Poole & Co (Savile Row) Ltd was established in 1806 as a military tailor, and prospered during the Napoleonic wars. Subsequently it became the first bespoke tailoring house to open premises on London's Savile Row, in 1846. By 1890, Henry Poole & Co was the largest bespoke tailors in the world.
The story of the dining suit: in 1865 The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) requested that Henry Poole cut a short silk evening coat, waistcoat and trousers as a more informal alternative to the traditional white-tie dress suit. As the ledgers record, it was to be worn at dinners at his country house, Sandringham. Poole thus cut the blueprint for the garment that we know today as the dinner jacket. Founding members of the Tuxedo Club in New York and Henry Poole customers William Waldorf Astor, Robert Goelet, Ogden Mills and Pierre Lorrilard then introduced the short evening coat to America. The dining suit was henceforth known in the USA as the tuxedo.
